From the Series “Surf Tribe”

Size/edition t.b.c.

Stephan Vanfleteren is one of Belgium’s most renowned photographers. Besides his extensive reports, he is mostly known for his portraits. From typical Belgians to celebrities and young pupils at an old maritime school, countless people have been portrayed in his inimitable style.

One of his most recent projects is Surf Tribe, for which he documented surfers all over the world. Instead of action shots, he presents these surfers in the black and white portrait style for which he is so well known. Another series, Terre / Mer, brought Vanfleteren to the southern Dutch peninsula of Walcheren. In the footsteps of influential painters like Jan Toorop and Piet Mondriaan a century before, he set out to document the dunes, the beach, the see, the trees and the church touwers. By applying movement and colour, the resulting photographs convey the stillness of the remote region.
